Launch of the "FACTS FOR LIFE" Publication

Bomi County, 19 October 2010

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good Morning Everyone!

The launching in Liberia of the publication " Facts for Life" is an important event. This flagship publication will be an important source of information for those who need it the most. Difficult issues such as how to prevent child and maternal deaths, diseases, injuries and violence are presented in an accessible way.

A practical guide for students, teachers, health workers on the ground but also for policy makers.

Yesterday, I had the privilege of visiting numerous facilities and meeting many people, learning about the challenges you face every day in ensuring quality health care and well being for all children in Liberia.

Facts for Life is one key tool, if used properly and widely, that will unite efforts of all partners in the country, ensuring that families hear the same simple messages again and again from different sources, making it easier to understand and practice and maintain the recommended healthy lifestyle.

We all know that Liberia needs added efforts to halt the spread of HIV and at the same time provide care and services to children and families affected by HIV and AIDS.  Facts for Life provide abundant information for health workers, but also targets children and young people, teachers, families and communities.

This publication gives at the same time a strong message of hope; solutions are within reach of all those who are facing problems, including those with HIV/Aids.

The messages are at the same time a clear statement that information, education as well as prevention are important. Ignorance is the enemy of the Aids response.

Young people especially should know about the devastating consequences of this disease.

Let us hope that this publication can help many in rejecting stigma and taboos.

Finally, I congratulate all those who are involved in this initiative: 8 UN entities including UNAIDS, UNICEF, WHO.

It is my sincere hope that it will be widely used by you.

Thank you all.
